As found/As Left Calibration

10-Point As Found/As Left Calibration Services

When an auditor asks for proof that your torque transducer was performing within specification before it was serviced, a standard calibration certificate is not enough. You need documented evidence of the instrument’s condition at two critical moments: the moment it arrived and the moment it left our lab.

Our 10-point As Found/As Left calibration delivers exactly that. We perform two full 10-point calibrations on your torque transducer, capturing data at ten ascending points and ten descending points. The first calibration captures the unit’s performance as received, before any repairs, adjustments, or modifications. The second captures its performance after all work is complete. Both data sets are provided on your calibration certificate, giving you an unbroken record of instrument status that satisfies the documentation requirements of ISO 9001, AS9100, and other regulated quality systems.

Every calibration is performed in our NVLAP-accredited laboratory (Lab Code 200487-0) and backed by an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited, NIST-traceable certificate.

Why As Found/As Left Data Matters for Compliance

Quality systems like ISO 9001:2015 (Clause 7.1.5) require organizations to retain documented information as evidence that monitoring and measuring resources are fit for purpose. When a torque transducer is found to be out of tolerance, the standard goes further: you must evaluate the validity of previous measurement results and take corrective action.

As Found data is your evidence. It establishes a documented baseline of how the transducer was performing in the field before we touched it. Without it, you cannot demonstrate whether the instrument was in or out of specification during its last service interval, and that gap becomes a finding during an audit.

As Left data closes the loop. It confirms that the transducer left our lab performing within the manufacturer’s recommended tolerance after all necessary adjustments were made. Together, these two data sets create the audit trail calibration documentation that quality managers and compliance officers need to satisfy both internal reviews and external auditors.

How Our 10-Point As Found/As Left Calibration Works

The process begins the moment your transducer arrives at our Hoffman Estates, Illinois, facility. Our technicians perform a complete 10-point calibration on the unit as received, capturing data at 10 ascending points and 10 descending points. This is the As Found record.

Next, we inspect the transducer and perform any necessary repairs, adjustments, or modifications. No work is performed until we obtain your approval to proceed with any repairs.

Once all service work is complete, we perform a second full 10-point calibration under the same conditions. This is the As Left record. Both calibrations are documented on an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited certificate with full NIST traceability.

For Himmelstein-manufactured torque transducers, we also offer a 10-point As Found/As Left calibration with temperature compensation. This adds temperature testing and a speed run at the transducer’s maximum rated speed between the As Found and As Left calibrations, verifying performance under environmental stress before the final calibration is completed.

Built for Regulated Industries

We serve quality managers, metrology engineers, and compliance officers in aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and other industries where calibration for quality systems is not optional. Organizations like Lockheed Martin, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Volvo, and Rolls-Royce rely on our calibration services to maintain the accuracy of their torque measurement programs.

Our lab operates nine accredited calibration stands covering ranges from 10 ozf-in to 4,000,000 lbf-in (0.07 Nm to 452,000 Nm). We calibrate torque transducers from virtually any manufacturer, including HBM, Honeywell, Lebow, Futek, Kistler, Norbar, PCB, and many others. Multiple stands mean optimal measurement uncertainty for your specific transducer range and reduced queuing delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between As Found and As Left calibration data?

As Found data captures your transducer’s performance as it was received by our lab, before any adjustments or repairs. As Left data captures its performance after all service work is complete. If a transducer arrives within specification and no adjustments are needed, the As Found and As Left data will be identical, and both will be documented on a single certificate. If the As Found data shows the unit is out of tolerance, adjustments are made, and the As Left calibration confirms the unit now meets specification.

Does ISO 9001 require As Found/As Left calibration?

ISO 9001:2015 does not explicitly mandate As Found/As Left documentation by name. However, Clause 7.1.5 requires organizations to retain evidence that measuring equipment is fit for purpose, and it requires corrective action when equipment is found to be out of calibration, including evaluating the impact on previous measurements. As Found/As Left calibration data is the most direct way to meet these requirements and demonstrate compliance during an audit.

Can you calibrate torque transducers from other manufacturers?

Yes. We perform accredited 10-point and 10-point As Found/As Left calibrations on torque transducers from virtually any manufacturer, subject to our ability to mount the unit in our calibration stands. Temperature compensation services are available exclusively for Himmelstein-manufactured transducers.

How do I send my transducer in for calibration?

Submit a Request for RMA (Return Material Authorization) through our website or call us at 1-800-MEASURE (1-800-632-7873). Include a description of the service required, and we will provide instructions for shipping your unit to our facility.
